The cemetery is about 121 acres. The official web site is here. The web site tells us:
"On Dec. 25, 1863, Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas, “The Rock of Chickamauga," issued General Orders No. 296 creating a national cemetery in commemoration of the Battles of Chattanooga, Nov. 23-27, 1863."
The first burials were done in 1863, the cemetery itself was "established" in 1867. As of 2005 there were approximately 44,000 burials at this cemetery. Find A Grave has almost 50,000 memorials listed.
The day we visited we saw several funerals taking place, it is a cemetery capable of accepting more of our veterans in their final resting place.
Man and I rode around, got out and walked around a bit, paying our respects to veterans of many wars, some in unmarked graves.
