Sunday's Stories, 52 Ancestor Weeks, Week # 16, Friederick Link

Copyright 2014, CABS for Reflections From the Fence

This is week 16 of my participation Amy Johnson Crow's, once a week challenge to blog about one ancestor a week, tell their story, biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem — anything that focuses on that one ancestor. More about the challenge can be found at her Blog, No Story Too Small.

Friederick (spelled Fredrick on the official record) Link was born on September 9, 1888 in Grant Township, Huron County, Michigan to Christian Link and his wife Katherine (nee Giess or Gease) Link.  His birth record appears on two opposing pages of the Huron County records.  It is presented below.  Note that for this presentation, the images have been digitally edited, removing many birth records in the middle of the page, this editing did remove the written Birthplace, Grant township, which was written on the third line and after that was indicated by ditto marks.

Friederick was confirmed at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pigeon/Linkville, Huron County, Michigan. His confirmation record, written in German, is below, a rough extraction of the document says: 20 March 1902, Friederick Link son of Christian Link and his wife, Katherine nee Giess was confirmed.

On August 18, 1909 Pastor August Diedmann of the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pigeon/Linkville, Huron County, Michigan married Friedrich Link and Alma Rebeka Gerth in Huron County. Alma was the daughter of Peter Gerth and his wife Katharina (nee Ruthig) Gerth. The witnesses to the marriage were Fred Gehkre and Lilly Gerth. Soon Fred and Lilly would marry. Man is one of Fred and Lilly's grandchildren.

Below is the church record of the marriage of Fred and Alma.

And, this is the civil registration of the marriage in Huron County.  Again the record spans two pages and has been digitally edited.

Here is the happy couple on their wedding day, Alma and Fred.  (The photo is rather out of focus, what a shame.)

Before World War I broke out, Fred and Alma had four children:  Wilbert, Vera Walter and Fred Jr.  They would have two more children, Lorraine and John C.

Fred did register for the draft for WWI in Huron County, the registration shows he is a farm laborer for the Michigan Sugar Company in Sebewaing, Huron County, Michigan, that he has a wife and four children, he is of medium height and build, has blue eyes and brown hair.

He has been found on the 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 census enumerations.  In 1910 and 1920 we find him in Huron County, but, by 1930 and in 1940 he is living in Saginaw County, Michigan.

Fred's funeral notice read as follows, newspaper source unknown:
     "Link, Fredrick (Fred),
     2296 Linda Avenue.
Funeral services will take place a 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bethany Church, Center and McCarty Roads.  Rev. Otto Drevlow will officiate with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the Case Chapel, 409 Adams Street, from 3 p.m. Sunday until 11 a.m. Tuesday and at the church from 1 p.m. until time of service."

Another obituary was located in the November 9, 1968 issue of the Saginaw News, Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan as follows:
     Link, Frederick (Fred)
     2296 Linda Avenue.
Passed away at his home early Saturday morning after a lingering illness.  Age 80 years.  He was born Sept. 9, 1888, in Huron County. On Aug. 18, 1909, he married Miss Alma Gerth in Linkville, Huron County.  She survives him.  They came to Saginaw in 1925.  He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, and was employed at the Chevrolet Grey Iron Foundry from 1925 to 1945, after which he was self-employed in the carpenter trade.  Surviving, besides his wife, are three daughters and four sons, Mrs. Norman (Lorraine) LaBelle, Mount Pleasant; Mrs. Elmer (Vera) Hammerschmidt and Mrs. Allan (Marion) Frost, both of Saginaw; Fred H. Link, Cadillac; Wilbert E. Link, Hemlock; John C. and Walter H. Link, both of Saginaw; 24 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will take place at a time to be announced later. Friends may call at the Case Chapel, 409 Adams St., after 3 p.m. Sunday. Those, who so desire, may give memorials to Bethany Lutheran Church."

Wish list for Fred Link, a few photos, a photo of any headstone.
